You would first have to create a Linux Mint Live USB drive. YUMI is one tool that runs on Windows that can be used to do this.

If your computer doesn't support USB booting, you'll also need some other boot device, such as a floppy disk. With the floppy, you can load a boot manager that can recognize the Flash drive and load code from it.

Download unetbootin.

Install and use it to create a bootable usb drive/stick with the linux install iso.

Then boot from usb and install - dual boot is the way to go, if you have the space.

Linux Mint LXDE would be good for your hardware, or Xubuntu or Lubuntu for better aesthetics.

Latest Xubuntu is particularly nice. How to install Linux on a computer running Windows 2000 using a usb stick?
Can't be done. An XP / W2K PC that old can't even boot to a USB Flash Drive because the BIOS Firmware is way too old.

Download and burn the ISO file of Linux Mint 11 LXDE Edition, and burn it to a CD using the free Infra Recorder, for example.

Once burned, it runs as a LIVE CD, and it really likes older computers.
