What is the best version of Linux for a desktop?

I want to upgrade from Windows to Linux, but would like to know what is the best version of Linux to put on a workstation, and why. What is the best version of Linux for a desktop?
If you want to play Linux and simplicity is your goal then stick with Ubuntu, Mint, etc. But keep in mind that you will NOT be learning much Linux skills. For example if you are an Ubuntu user you will likely not even know what a terminal session (bash prompt) is.

If you are serious about Linux and want a career then you should go with Fedora, or Centos. Fedora and Centos are essentially RHEL. Almost all businesses use RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux). No it is not "cutting edge", etc. No it is not "game friendly" or any of that. But it is what the employers use.

If you seek to get a "Linux+" or other professional certification then you will have to learn a real Linux like RHEL or Novel/SUSE. Mint and Ubuntu do things very differently.
Ubuntu is just about the worst Linux distro. available these days. Canonical who produce Ubuntu have become arrogant and ignored users needs however well voiced across the many Forums that make reference to Ubuntu. For example Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't offer the classic GNOME Desktop and it doesn't include the Synaptic Package Manager despite the fact many users did not want these changes. I used to have much time for Ubuntu starting with Ubuntu 6.10 finishing with the last decent release which was Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint Debian Edition then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint Debian Edition can also be run straight from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Ubuntu is my recommendation. Ubuntu has the UI that Microsoft Windows stole.

Ubuntu also has support in case if you have trouble.

Easy install from a disk/USB stick, Dual Boot, Install in your windows like an app.

Try it for yourself, you will never go back!

Wish you luck!
it depends on what you are doing with the workstation,

building from the bottom up then slackware would be a good choice

if you want free, open source only then fedora

i, personally, use mandriva linux as an audio and visual workstation - as well as an all round desktop pc

Depends what you need in a distro.

When I made the switch several years ago I wanted:

1 easy to use for beginners

2 lots of people using it (more people the more questions asked on forums, this does help more than you can imagine)

3 relatively nice looking

I settled on the KDE Ubuntu (kubuntu). K desktop looks better than Gnome (Ubuntu 11.10 now uses the Unity desktop). Since it is free and open source there are many "offshoots" of Ubuntu. Mint being one (the more time that passes the more they separate). Mint was made to for easier "out of the box" usage. Ubuntu now allows you to install non open source software during install.

A good place to go is distrowatch. This lists many distros and what they are for.

Look about a quarter of the way down to the far right. There is a list of "Page Hit Ranking".
Install Ubuntu

Recommended for Windows Users Shifting to Ubuntu

The Plus Point:

It has a SoftwareCenter. So you dont need to type large commands the old-fashioned way/pro-way .

The software Center Finds and installs software for you

:P keep rocking :P
"Best" is a relative term based on experience and/or personality. Try Fedora, Debian, or Ubuntu in Gnome, KDE, and XFCE desktop environments to see what you like.
Of course UBUNTU!!!

Its Lite and better than other versions...
