What version of linux should i get if i'm a first time user?

I have a Macbook Pro and was wondering if i could try linux and still keep Mac OS X 10.4. What should I do and is it possible to have multiple OS's on a single hard drive?What version of linux should i get if i'm a first time user?

I have never ran linux on a macbook since I have not owned one. I currently have a macpro desktop, but have three harddrives. I run windows, linux and osx for various purposes. Mostly I use linux because I am a dork and have been messing around with it since before I can remember.
