What linux works the closest to Windows and is also free?What free linux is the closest to windows?
I recommend Linux Mint 6 (Main Edition) which you will find familiar and it works pretty much 'out of the box'.

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 can be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

On the technical level, all Linux is similar and not at all like windows. On the superficial level, though:



Linux Mint is a great Linux if you want to use Gnome. They have configured Gnome to be much like Windows. However, I think that KDE is even more like Windows. You can compare the two: Gnome: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en鈥?/a> KDE: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co鈥?/a>



Linux Mint has an excellent implementation of KDE as well, it's under their Community Editions. If you're not going to be installing a lot of programs, great, you can use their software portal. If you are going to be installing a lot of programs, don't use Linux Mint KDE, as on the technical level it's all screwed up.

Kubuntu is not at all close to Windows.

Ubuntu can't even play DVDs right off the bat.

Elive (www.elive-cd.org) and fedora (www.fedoraproject.com) are very great.

I'm a Windows user, and have been one for the 14 years of my 15yr life. However, Linux is wayy easier, more fun to use and just makes me happy.

Speaking on your part, I personally recommend FEDORA.

However, the specs of you system (hdd size, space, computer model, RAM and processor) might help us determine.
As far as cost is concern, as per my knowledge all versions are free except Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SuSe. The popular versions are OpenSuSe, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS(same as Red Hat Enterprise Linux).



And the second question which Linux works closest to Windows. All are similar to windows, but again you are the best judge.
