What Are Linux Distros Recommended For Computers With 1GHz Processor?

My Mom bought a new computer, but only has a 1GHz processor. It has Linux: Ubuntu 11.04, but the thing is, there is always problems, such as freezing, mouse acting up etc.

I had a computer before (my Dad's work computer, an old computer) that had a 1.60Ghz processor and 512MB RAM, I had the same problems with that. I need a good distro with Gnome what will replace it.What Are Linux Distros Recommended For Computers With 1GHz Processor?
Archlinux is lighweight, but not meant for everyone.
A big part of it is the Desktop Environment. Using something like Gnome 3 or Unity on an older computer will likely bog it down.

I would recommend XFCE, which is really similar to Gnome 2, and runs a lot smoother. You can set it up with most distros, Fedora has a nice install CD, as does Mint.

If you want to get your hands dirty, I recommend Arch Linux. It is really fun to install, as you build your system from the ground up, so only install the things you really need. They have a great community and it is a great way to learn. What Are Linux Distros Recommended For Computers With 1GHz Processor?
Puppy Linux is quite good. It's designed for older machines. When I tried it out a while ago I found it very fast and stable. I did find it somewhat confusing to install software though.

I actually just finished trying out Xubuntu, which is essentially Ubuntu based on the XFCE desktop and was pleasantly surprised. It looks more like Ubuntu 10.10 (or earlier) did, with a more classic looking gnome style desktop.

It is quite fast, easy to use and designed for older machines. I gave it a shot a year or so ago and didn't like it, however in a span of a year they have come a long way and I'm quite pleased with it.

I also find for a desktop that lacks 'eye-candy', it looks quite nice.

There is also Lubuntu, which apparently uses less resources then even Xubuntu, however I've heard it's a little more difficult to us. I have personally not tried it out however.

Give Xubuntu and/or Puppy a shot. Both should run fine, it will come down to personal preference.
You might want to use the 10.04 LTS version of ubuntu. This is the current Long Term Support Version. Ubuntu 11.04 is using Unity as base desktop environment, Gnome is only the back up. This might be the problem. It is strange thou that you have similar problems on two different computers, maybe you use a device connected to your pic's which is not properly supported and causes the freezes. Another cause could be the lack of memory in your systems. You might want to extend to at least 1GB RAM.

If not you'd better convert to a light distro:

xubuntu, lubuntu, linux mint XFCE or Linux mint LXDE versions. Again I'd rely on the 10.04 LTS based versions.

Another option are the minimal distro's like puppy Linux or DSL, but I do not prefer those. What Are Linux Distros Recommended For Computers With 1GHz Processor?
What you need is an older version of Ubuntu. Download an older version of the 32 bit version of Ubuntu, and you should be fine.
Your problem might be that you are not using the best drivers for your video card. Check this link on ow to install the best drivers.

Good luck
puppy linux deffinetly will run great

Thanks

Dan
